The description here on Amazon is a little bit misleading. As it has Rafael Grassetti as the first Author, you might think he had a large portion to do with the book. He has a small section doing a couple of 'speed sculpts' towards the end of the book. That being said, the other artists in the book are also very talented and the book itself is still a great resource full of tips you can refer back to for various things... such as hard surface plating for a character, or various types of creature sculpts. As well as some different approaches to getting some nice renders of your pieces. That being said, it's largely a collection of various tutorials from different artists, similar to what you might find in a CG World Magazine or 3D Artist Magazine. Still worth being part of the collection for any 3D character modeler.
When I first review this book I did give it a low score on Amazon. The problem for me was that I was new to ZBrush and this book did not have clear steps from start to end on a given project for someone learning a whole new software. After learning more on ZBrush and advancing my skills, I have found myself returning to this book to learn what it holds within.Someone that was new to ZBrush, you will find this book hard to follow. As soon as you have move forward beyond the first understanding of ZBrush interface you can then pick up this book and take your learning to the next level and gain skills that otherwise would be hard to find.4 Star from me - It is printed beautifully and has given me skills that I will use for life. But be aware this book will not be your only learning tool to ZBrush but more tips and techniques to first class modelling.
Finally, a zBrush book with real-world as well as truly beautiful examples. Most zBrush (and Mudbox) books Use the standard format of showing you how to do things and then giving you examples of the lessons. And that is fine. But this book feels like they have taken the reverse approach to amazing effect: it still follow the normal flow but instead of trying to come up with examples or tutorials next to follow the theory, the authors seem to just Know what beautiful works of zBrush mastery to build as the focal point of their chapters, and then, as if working their way backwards, they show you exactly how to do them.Instead of the requisite monster or alien to show process (thought there are those here too), the authors use real-worl examples and artwork they and others use in their portfolio galleries and then show you how they were done so you can follow. What's more, it's among the very first books to cover Dynamesh and other new tools, then how they were used not just in some weird play sculpt, but how they are used in a real working setting or made for display or production. Thus, they are "finished" and polished for display instead of just another book example that wouldn't be intended for being showcased or used. The book also delves into the strengths and different styles and variations in workflow of different zBrush experts, and you will find how there are many and different ways to do different functions so you can grow your own mastery of different styles and use the ones that fit your needs or taste best.Instead of a fixed approach, the book utilizes different elements and zBrush concepts to provide you with different methods of instruction as well. There are chapters for step-by-step projects; for hard-surface modeling; different ways of modeling/sculpting characters (monsters, mercenaries, humor/toon-style characters and more. The gallery alone is a fresh view of truly beautiful works of art that, even those that have been popular and that you may have seen online can be "experienced" in a different way now that they are shown in print form (and thus, much much higher resolution). In fact, it also includes topics not usually covered in the usual instruction books. For example, there are chapters devoted to the section for speed sculpts, something you don't normally see in other books. Plus, merging modern, high tech art (zBrush) with the ways of the old masters by using zBrush for Classical sculpture, creating a realistic Greek sculpture that looks like something recently found that's thousands of years old; as well as a Roman sculpture (just to complete the historic, and historical, set). But overall, the best part is because the authors guide you in building these projects, and if you're even just knowledgeable enough with zBrush, this book (next only to practice and learning human anatomy) is arguably the fastest way towards zooming and jumping to the highest levels of zBush mastery and-- if you haven't already-- build veritble masterpieces of zBrush art. And even if you're a seasoned artist, you'll still find the methods, projects and techniques of other artists invaluable.
This is a great book with many references, illustrations, tips & tricks, and guides. It is not completely step-by-step however has instructions where you need it which is perfect and leaves more room for pictures and illustrations so you can really visualize what the authors are doing. My knowledge of Zbrush definitely needed a step up and this book took me to the right direction. If you are a total beginner I'd suggest getting familiar with the program first before diving into this but it can't hurt by looking over this book while getting started.Overall awesome book with large illustrations and would recommend to anyone using zBrush.
Great book. It covers the newer features of Zbrush and shows you the workflow that each artist went through to come up with their end product. I personally find this more useful than explaining to use X brush to do Y cause each brush can be used in a variety of ways and limiting it just doesn't make sense. For instance, one section covers a mech design and the other covers the armored rhino on the cover. Each has hard surfaces on them, but each take a different approach to getting their result. That might be frustrating to the users new to Zbrush who are looking for a step-by-step, but it shows you different methods so the user can try both and see which works better for them.Pictures and text are used to express each step of the process. It generally follows a "Use this brush to move the cheek bones out (Fig 8)" method so you can get a good idea of what they are doing and how that brush is used. You could almost follow along and end up with a similar result but following along with the description and pictures. It is also full of beautiful pictures of Zbrush work to get your creative juices flowing. That combined with the explanations give you a great product for your money.
this is just what i was looking for, this book has first some tips about some aspects of zbrush like hard surface while showing you nice projects, then some step by step tutorials with great projects as well, some inspirational gallery, roman sculpting techniques, then some cool shot explanation of projects and finally some speed sculpting..... is just what you need in all cases, if u are beginner, intermediate or advanced. Great buy.
